Kathy: But what will happen to me if I defy an order from the Empress— Jinjur's grandmother?
Fred: If she dies in a duel that she asked for, under conditions that she dictated, her family cannot take revenge.
Fred: The Empress' order is meant to protect you, not Jinjur. It was the Empress who gave me the go-ahead to find you and bring you back here. And I have a private communique from her vowing to protect you against Jinjur's clan and the Black Watch. If Jinjur wins the duel, the Empress intends to have her arrested for treason against Songween. Jinjur must never, ever become Duchess of Rackenroon. The Empress understands how important it is that you do.
B: Peace On Earth?
Fred: Yes, she is Jinjur's grandmother, but the Empress knows just how dangerous Jinjur would be if she were to gain control of Blood and Bone as well as the Black Watch and Lily Guard, and all their allies. She must be taken out. Permanently.
Kathy: Wow.
Kathy: It must be really awkward in that family at Christmastime...
