A: Throw-Away Gag

(Back in the litter with Songween. Sandy looks out of the window in silence.)

Songween: Penny for your thoughts, Kiddo.
Sandy: How could anyone abandon their child like that?!

Songween: People have their reasons... maybe they're not always good ones...
Sandy: But to go to all the trouble of bringing a baby into the world, only to dump it at an orphanage? That makes no sense—!

B: No-Kill Shelter

Songween: Kid, a lot of things in this world don't make sense. Maybe it made sense at the time. It's better than the alternative. At least this way they have a chance.

Songween: During the Afghan Wars, I saw how people got rid of unwanted children in Kaledistan, and I vowed that that sort of thing would never happen here. Again.
